Making DIY Personalized Wooden Signs

By Daniel Butler

Nowadays, it is easy to create arts and craft by yourself. You only need to have the imagination and creative thinking to do it. Every day and household items are only some of the objects where you can do it yourself. Personalized wooden signs are easy to do.

You may create these signs for a variety of reasons. It may be something as a surprise gift for a special person, your family, and your friends. It can be that you remembered an occasion coming up that you like to give to someone. This DIY project you have going is a great gift that your loved ones can appreciate.

If you are worried about the cost, it is not a cause for worry. Search for secondhand items or even unused ones in your house. Your project materials can be anything as long as it is still usable. You may also find trinkets which can serve as decorations if you like.

The first thing you need is wood. Look for one in your backyard or tool shed. If it is too big, you can cut it to the size you want. It also does not matter if the surface is rough because sandpapers can smooth it out. Sometimes, chipped side pieces can add to the design of the wood. So if you like, you may let these chips be.

Next, you cannot have a sign if there is nothing written in it. Get your writing materials and any items you are able to find in the house. Permanent markers will be great to use. However, using brushes might be better. The strokes are more pronounced in brushes. Use acrylic paints as well as these are fast drying inks.

Speaking of writing, you also need to think of what you want to put on your sign. It may be your family name or a family motto. Favorite quotes and phrases may do as well. If you are sending it as a gift for a special occasion like a wedding, you may write down the name of the newlyweds and your message for them. The possibilities are endless.

Once the paint dries, you can now do finishing coat on its surface with mod podge water base sealer or any decoupage glue. It will protect the writings you have done and the designs you made. To DIY it, you can use polyvinyl acetate or PVA glue and mix it with an equal part of water. This mixture does the same job as well.

You can hang it up the wall once it dries. You may use the age old method of hammer and nails, or you can use vinyl decal. Whichever of the two you choose, clean first the wall of any dusts before placing the sign on its surface. The advantage of the vinyl decal or wall stickers over the former is that no holes will be present in both your sign and your wall.

Once you have finished, take a step back and admire what you have done. Place yourself across from it and pull up a chair to relax in. The fulfillment it gives you is worth the muscle aches you currently have for you did it all by yourself.
