Useful Information Regarding New York Immigration Lawyers

By Elizabeth Sullivan

The events that unfolded on 9/11 had a profound effect on how the United States relates with other countries around the world. Many areas and activities were affected and a lot of changes were made. Whereas many departments were affected, one of the most affected departments was the department of immigration. In the aftermath of 9/11, immigration became a very controversial issue in the United States. This is what New York Immigration Lawyers are all about.

Measures were put in place to reduce the number of people that crossed the border into the United States. Several people were deported back into their home countries in a bid to prevent such events from happening again the future. Despite all these changes in immigration, the United States is still the number one country in terms of making aliens legal permanent residents.

It is indicated by statistics that the US still agrees to take over a million foreigners into the country and offer them a permanent residence. Similarly, more visas are given by the country to visitors than any other countries in the world. The Department of Homeland Security is charged with the responsibility of granting aid to foreigners and supervising laws of immigration. The name of this department is abbreviated as DHS.

The DHS was formed in the aftermath of 9/11 and was charged with the sole responsibility of ensuring that no more terrorist attacks happen on the US soil. There are very many different players in the issue of migration. Among these players are immigration lawyers. Immigration lawyers hold a special place in the field of migration. They need to have a lot of experience and knowledge in order to do their job effectively.

Immigration lawyers should generally know the law and its application to specific areas of immigration. Proficiency is required in the field of immigration in general, citizenship, and employment. What separates these attorneys from other kinds of lawyers is their knowledge of migration laws, the people they deal with, and the work they do. This is the reason as to why they should be hired when one has problems that relate to migration.

Prerequisites needed for one to be an immigration lawyer and those of any other type of lawyer are same. At least two degrees are required of an individual prior to being licensed. It is for this reason that individuals have to earn an undergraduate degree in their preferred major. This often takes four year. Considering some factors, this duration may be longer or shorter.

The undergraduate degree is usually a major requirement for being admitted into law school. Law school lasts another four to five years, and graduates earn a Juris Doctor Law degree. During law school, one has to specialize in migration law. Here, they will cover courses such as statutory analysis, citizenship, employment, advising, and interviewing.

After completing law school, one must proceed to take and pass the bar exam. Passing this exam earns one a license to become a full-pledged lawyer. However, before applying for a job, one needs to have work experience and internship.
