Tips To Find Organizations That Allocate Donations Properly

By Dennis Wood

People are generous and they like to give funds to help the needy. When you give, you want to ensure that the money given serves the needy and is not misappropriated. You want to give to an organization that is transparent, responsible and runs their affairs in an efficient way. Here is how to find charities that allocate donations properly.

Before you give to any organization, you have to carry out due diligence. Find out if it has been properly registered for the cause that it runs. Check out what other people say about it and if there are any complaints as to what it does or as to how it uses its finances. If there are positive reviews, then this is a good sign. However, if there are lots of complaints and negative reviews about it, it is best that you rethink whether you want to donate to it.

If you are not sure about which nonprofit to give to you can approach the issue from another perspective. Outline which issues you are passionate about and you would like to support. Then check which nonprofits are the leading ones in this industry. You can then decide to be giving to these organizations. That is off course after you have done your investigations about the organization.

Most credible nonprofits make their financial records public. They publish at least once or twice a year. They can publish these records on their website. Most nonprofits will also publish in the local dailies their accounting records. You can go through the records to see how funds were used. The organization should also be audited on a regular basis.

You can choose to give large gifts or small gifts; it depends on your financial flexibility. When you are giving a large gift, you can give it once in a while; let's say once in a year. When you are giving smaller gifts, you can give more frequently. You can choose to give every month or after every few months.

Do not give to someone just because they have called you over the phone. Most nonprofits use cold calling to raise funds, but it is better that you use safer channels to send in your money. You can go to the organizations website and donate through the website. You also have the option of mailing a check.

There are watchdog groups that help to keep charities in check. Before you start dealing with any nonprofit organization, go through the database of the watchdog groups to see if the nonprofit is in good standing. Check with a few of the groups just to be sure. These watchdog groups point out any inappropriate behavior that a nonprofit might be engaging in.

Giving to charity is a good idea since the aid given will help to change the lives of many people. Do not be afraid to give just because of a few nonprofits that misappropriate funds. As long as you have carried out your due diligence and you have found out that the organization you want to give to is legitimate, then go ahead and give.
